A Generation Of Not Enough!

Most mornings I start my day sipping a cup of gourmet coffee while curled up on the couch in my “Snuggie” reading my Bible. I’d like to say I’m blessed, but really I’m spoiled. Having it so good makes me forget those times in my life when I truly had less. When I was seven years old, my family lived in a house that didn’t have a bath tub or shower. We bathed in a #3 wash tub. I look back at that time wondering how my mom managed to take care of us there. I was oblivious to my family’s poverty or hardship. I was just thrilled that I didn’t have to take a bath that often. We didn’t use much water; we were being “green” without even realizing it. On winter days, it would take mom at least 30 minutes to warm up water on the stove for that cold metal tub.

Nowadays, I’m depressed after watching HGTV because I don’t have a whirlpool tub overlooking a meadow. I’m freakin’ pathetic. I groan and complain because I eat too much and then I’m miserable. What’s wrong with this picture? When I was a child how thrilling it was to get a candy bar that I shared with my 2 older sisters. Now I can buy a whole pack for myself and still not rekindle that thrill of appreciation.

I love reading Proverbs, I read through the book at least once a month. I’m hoping repetition will hide these jewels of wisdom in my heart and then become evident in my actions. The following passage just cuts to the bone of who is in control of man’s contentment and this universe. God, I pray that You will rekindle thankfulness and contentment in my generation!

“Surely I am more stupid than any man, And do not have the understanding of a man. I neither learned wisdom nor have knowledge of the Holy One. Who has ascended into heaven, or descended? Who has gathered the wind in His fists? Who has bound the waters in a garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is His name, and what is His Son’s name, If you know? Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him. Do not add to His words, Lest He rebuke you, and you be found a liar. Two things I request of You (Deprive me not before I die): Remove falsehood and lies far from me; Give me neither poverty nor riches—Feed me with the food allotted to me; Lest I be full and deny You, And say, “Who is the LORD?” Or lest I be poor and steal, And profane the name of my God. Do not malign a servant to his master, Lest he curse you, and you be found guilty. There is a generation that curses its father, And does not bless its mother. There is a generation that is pure in its own eyes, Yet is not washed from its filthiness. There is a generation—oh, how lofty are their eyes! And their eyelids are lifted up. There is a generation whose teeth are like swords, And whose fangs are like knives, To devour the poor from off the earth, And the needy from among men. The leech has two daughters—Give and Give! There are three things that are never satisfied, Four never say, ‘Enough!’: The grave, The barren womb, The earth that is not satisfied with water—And the fire never says, ‘Enough!'” Proverbs 30:2-16
